Memorial Foundation™ Revolver
|
|
The
©Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation™, in
conjunction with A&A Engraving, Inc.® announces the
commission and release of the highly engraved 60th
Anniversary Walker commemorative.
The detailed engraving was created by A&A Engraving, Inc.
to the specifications of Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation™. Detailed
engravings on this magnificent piece include the old and the new. The engravings on the frame depict the history of
©Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and the Crazy Horse
Dream. On the right side,
Korczak is pictured next to the tent he lived in while building his
log studio-home when he arrived at Crazy Horse in 1947.
Also next to Korczak is the “Old Buda,” a gasoline powered
compressor that ran a small jackhammer, which was put into commission
in 1949. The left side of
the revolver includes engravings of the new Drillmaster 150DH used to
drill holes for setting explosives.
Also on the left side is the new
Orientation and Communication Center.
Korczak is in the clouds diligently watching over the Dream.
The red-tailed hawk, which held special significance for Crazy
Horse after appearing to him in a vision, is engraved on each side of
the frame. On the
cylinder, the Crazy Horse Mountain carving in progress is
shown as it appears today, 2005.
The cylinder also includes the crazy Horse Memorial Foundation
Seal and an engraving of Korczak and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear
in front of the marble scale model from a photograph taken in June of
1948. A special engraving
on the bolster is of Korczak and Ruth who were both inspired by what
Korczak frequently referred to as “the beauty and justice of the
Crazy Horse Dream.” The
history of the Colt® Walker revolver is as rich as the
history of the Crazy Horse Monument itself!
The original Colt® Walkers were built in 1847.
The revolvers weighed nearly 5 pounds and were so huge that
they were carried in a saddle scabbard instead of a belt holster.
Its .44 caliber 9-inch barrel was designed to use a charge of
black powder that was considered heavy in most rifles.
A full charge of powder was rarely used, as the recoil was so
ferocious that most mounted men were unable to control it in combat. It was truly the “Magnum” of its day. There were only
about 1100 original Walkers produced and very few remain in the hands
of advanced collectors today. Since
Colt® has not produced these revolvers for over 150 years,
the Uberti Walker .44 replica of the original Colt® Walker
was selected maintaining the design and mechanical features.
